Soils of the Fell Sandstone

Synopsis
Shows the range of soils found in one area of northern England and explains reasons for their formation. Shows upland soil types ranging from brown earths and podzols to gley and peat soils in their landscape. Discusses environmental factors of climate, topography, parent material and vegetation, and for each soil describes and illustrates the processes of soil development. Relates the long-term trend in soil evolution in this heather moorland of north-east England to changes in land use and vegetation, such as forest clearance.
