- Synopsis
- Commissioned by the Commissariat for Exports as a documentary aimed at the western countries to show the export potential of the Soviet Union. Vertov mounted ten expeditions to get the material for the film. Ranges across the Soviet Union, particular emphasis being put on minority nationalities like the Uzbeks, Tartars and Bouriats and their identity within the State. In 3 parts: Part 1 consists of an accusation against the capitalist system. An opposition is made between the toils of the workers and the grotesque pastimes of the rich, the ferocious exploitation of the colonial countries and the parasitic existence of the exploiters. (This part of the film uses pieces of foreign newsreels, documentaries and ethnographic films). Part 2 shows the infinite diversity of the people of the USSR, its landscapes and its natural resources. Part 3 is about the various activities of the Soviet people - hunting, fishing, agriculture, industry.
