Sites of Action of Drugs on the Isolated Intestine: Guinea Pig Ileum

Synopsis
Preparation: guinea pig ileum. The presentation includes a brief theoretical introduction to the possible sites of drug action on the longitudinal smooth muscle layer of the intestine, based on a consideration of autonomic nervous system innervation and muscle membrane reactivity. The Biovideograph record shows the initial conditioning stages of the isolated organ preparation, the obtaining of standard submaximal responses to a range of parasympathomimetics with action on nicotine and muscarinic sites followed by the demonstration of selective antagonism using hexamethonium and atropine at the two sites.
