Selenium Deficiency and Livestock Diseases in Britain

Synopsis
The selenium responsive diseases are not new, but several advances have been made since 1971, so the subject is reconsidered in general terms and white muscle disease as seen in Britain is considered in detail. The clinical signs, diagnosis, epidemiology & treatment of white muscle disease in cattle and sheep are discussed. An explanation for the increased prevalence of this condition in livestock in Britain is proposed and the current importance of nutritional diseases is emphasised.
