Remaking a 6000-Year-Old Hungarian Copper Shafthole Axe
- Synopsis
- Places the casting process in context by presenting an overview of the development of the Copper and Bronze Ages in Europe, then describes the ‘metal cycle’ from the point of finding raw copper ore, through the basics of refining smelting and alloying, to the casting of artifacts. A live demonstration of the entire casting process shows: how to prepare a bi-valve sand mould using a wooden pattern (for a replica of a 6000-year-old copper axe found in Hungary); how the smelting process works; how molten metal is cast into the mould. Reveals the completed axehead as the mould is opened and shows how the artifact appears after polishing.
