Examines the development of the Prison Service, looking at prison reform, the bringing of prisons under the Prison Commission’s control in 1878, and the 1949 Criminal Justice Act, which ushered in a more humane and constructive era in the treatment of criminals. Surveys prison life today, including the treatment of women prisoners and prisoners’ working conditions, education and physical recreation. Looks at the work of various members of the prison staff.
