Principles and Applications of Atomic Spectra, The

Synopsis
The electromagnetic spectrum. The essential parts of a spectrometer. How the emission spectrum of atomic hydrogen can be recorded. The relationships between the lines of the hydrogen spectrum. How each line can be correlated with a pair of energy levels of the hydrogen atom. How the spectrum of a silicon arc is photographed and how comparison with the spectrum of pure silicon enables the nature and concentrations of impurities in the silicon to be assessed. The reversal of the sodium D line is demonstrated, as an introduction to atomic absorption spectra. The atomic absorption spectrophotometer gives an example of the use of such spectra in analysis. X-radiation, and some of the uses of X-ray spectra. The operation of an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer.
