Abacus: Computer-Aided Architecture Design

Synopsis
Describes the work of the Architecture and Building Aids Computer Unit, Strathclyde (ABACUS) and illustrates a wide range of computer programs which influence architectural practice and education. Illustrates how the computer can be used to model and therfore predict the cost, performance and visual quality of buildings from the earliest stages of the design. The theme is exemplified by GOAL - an integrated package for appraisal of whole building design; AIR-Q - for simulation of movement particularly in terminus buildings: ESP for predicting the dynamic energy behaviour of buildings, and VISTA - for anticipating the visual impact of proposed buildings in sensitive urban and rural landscapes.
