- Synopsis
- Four half-hour programmes in which National Gallery director Neil MacGregor takes a particular painting and through it explores the ideas and beliefs shared by Europeans at the period in which it was made. He also discusses other pictures that reflect various aspects - philosophical, scientific and geographical - of these views. The programmes are: 1) People and God - The 15th Century: ‘The Donne Triptych’ by Hans Memling; 2) People and the Past - The 16th Century: ‘The Family of Darius before Alexander’ by Paolo Veronese; 3) People and Nature - The 17th Century: ‘An Autumn Landscape with a View of Het Steen’ by Peter Paul Rubens; 4) People and the Present - The 18th and 19th Centuries: ‘Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump’ by Joseph Wright of Derby.
