Outbreak!: Case Studies in Clinical Infection (8 Parts)
- Synopsis
- Eight programmes each identifying a common clinical problem - endocarditis, respiratory tract infection, enteric infection, urinary tract infection, meningitis, skin and soft tissue infection (illustrated by cellulitis and necrotizing fascilitis), hepitis, and commensals and pathogens - demonstrating how diagnostic microbiology can help. Each programme follows a dramatised case study of a patient with the clinical problem. The patient’s history is recorded, a physical examination made and clinical specimens taken. Relevant laboratory tests are demonstrated, showing examples of growths of organisms resulting from the tests. The patient is revisited, with the treatment prescribed and the probable outcome the case discussed. The programmes are designed to be integrated with benchside microscopy.

- Synopsis
- The programme provides visual, written and spoken descriptions of the many organisms which may be present in and on the body. Using two dramatised case studies of patients with sore throats, the programme follows the examination and tests carried out, demonstrating the tests in some detail, and showing slides of the possible organisms together with a brief description. The programme is designed to be integrated with benchsidemicroscopy carried out by the student, with tutor input. The aim of this programme is to augment the traditional teaching lab session, by providing human case studies together with the laboratory tests that help to confirm a diagnosis. The main audience for this series is level two medical students during the microbiology stage of the Basic Clinical Sciences Module.
