Oesophago-Gastrectomy

Synopsis
For a mid-to lower oesophageal tumour a right thoracotomy combined with an upper mid-line abdominal incision is chosen, the so-called Ivor Lewis approach. The technique of this approach and mobilisation of the stomach are demonstrated. Precise detail of the oesophago-gastric anastomosis is shown. For more distal oesophageal tumours occasionally a left thoracotomy incision is performed and a circumferential incision is then made in the diaphragm for mobilisation of the stomach. Details of this approach are also demonstrated and explained.
