Kiyoshi Suzaki looks at the Japanese techniques for leadtime reduction and continuous improvement in manufacturing with case studies from Borg-Warner, Hewlett-Packard and Apple Computers. With an introduction by Tom Peters on the need for these techniques, the sessions cover waste elimination, workplace organisation, total productive maintenance, quick changeover, process improvement, plant layout improvements, problem solving, quality improvement techniques such as ‘jidoka’ which allows multi-machine handling by operators, production scheduling, work standardisation and the role of managers and supervisors.
