New Born: Birthright

Synopsis
The range of neonatal competencies (reflexive behaviours, inter-sensory integration of information, visual and taste responses, imitation of facial expressions) is shown through a series of demonstrations. The usefulness of these competencies in fostering a close bond with the mother is stressed and the tendency for medical management of birth to disrupt this bond is illustrated. An alternative post-partum policy is illustrated and reference is made to Third-World country practices.
