Diploma Disease, The: An Argument with Pictures
- Synopsis
- The growth of bureaucracy in large organisations dominates modern economies throughout the world. The only way to get jobs is through educational credentials so gaining credentials comes to be the primary concern of schools. Education gives way to ritualised preparation for exams at the expense of developing creativity, imagination, self-discipline and the motivation to sustain lifelong learning. The symptoms are most worrying in the countries which can least afford them - the developing countries where jobs are scarcest, where the premium placed on diplomas is the highest, and where the contribution that schools could make to solving the problems of development is most crucial. The film explores the ‘diploma disease’ in Mexico, Sri Lanka, Japan and Britain.
