Attentional Dysfunctions: Problems in Orienting

Synopsis
Case study showing a subject who has a problem switching attention between objects. Neurological tests show some loss of vision and reveal problems in making visually guided movements. Tasks requiring switching of attention between objects or parts of objects, such as copying, matching, counting and reading nonsense words are all impaired, yet he can recognise and name objects and read single words aloud quite well. The case suggests that disorders of visual attention need to be distinguished carefully from disorders of visual object recognition.
