Making Masterpieces: Neil Macgregor at the National Gallery

Synopsis
Six half-hour programmes in which National Gallery director Neil MacGregor explores the relationship between painters and their materials: 1) Pictures as Things: Change and Decay: how paintings were made and whether they still appear as the artist originally intended; 2) The Materials of Faith: Eggs and Gold: the construction of two 14th-century alterpieces, one of them ‘The Wilton Diptych’ - the wooden panels, preparation, gilding and pigments;3) From Eggs to Oil: The Conquest of Light: how oil as a medium opened possibilities of painting light, shimmer and reflection; 4) From Illusion to Emotion: how artists use oils to manipulate reality by means of texture, optical illusion and different viewpoints; 5) Old Tricks and New Pigments: texture, the brushstroke and the impact of new pigments and prepared canvases in the 19th century; 6) Loss and Recovery: the effect of time and human intervention on paintings, plus the revelations brought about by restoration.
