LÖschian Landscapes

Synopsis
Introduces Lösch’s central place theory. Makes the point that settlement patterns in the real world are both complicated and interrelated; they arise from a wide variety of natural, political, economic and even chance components, but Lösch’s theory is concerned only with economic factors acting over space. Illustrates Lösch’s description of a trade area for a single product and shows the transition from a single, circular trade area to a series of different sized hexagonal trade areas covering a whole plain. Settlement hierarchies are described and the first ten nets in the hierarchy are used in the development of a hypothetical metropolis. The nets are shown rotating to their correct orientation and the resultant division into city-rich and city-poor areas can be seen. Finally Lösch’s economic pattern is compared to a real world example - the area around Birmingham.
