Leaving Bakul Bagan

Synopsis
Shot over a period of four months in 1992 in the cinema-verité style, the film examines the experiences of Bakul Bagan Saborna, a 21-year-old Bengali girl and cousin of the film-maker, leaving her large, extended family in Calcutta for higher education in the USA. It is an intimate portrayal of her interactions with her family during her last few days at home, full of conversational humour and vignettes of typical familial interactions. Incidental to this time and woven into the film are the effects of race riots throughout India in the aftermath of the destruction of a Muslim temple, the Babri masjic, by Hindu fanatics.
