Lateral Inhibition in the Retina

Synopsis
The types of cell in the cat’s retina and their basic actions are explained with the help of an animated diagram. Extracellular microelectrode recording from the axon of the ganglion cell is then shown. The centre and inhibitory surround of a receptive field are plotted experimentally. Returning to the animated diagram the inhibitory effect is explained and finally an experimental demonstration of lateral inhibition is given.*
