- Documentation
- Examines the methods and techniques of 14th-century Tuscan panel paintings. Using detailed instructions from ‘Il Libro dell’Arte’ ('The Craftsman’s Handbook’ by Italian painter and author Cennio di Drea Cennini (c1370-?), National Gallery experts demonstrate the stages of creating an alterpiece, including preparing the panel, making gesso, water gilding, burnishing, pigment grinding, and painting with egg tempera. The deomonstrations are linked to works by Duccio di Buoninsegna, Nardi di Cione and Jacopo di Cione. Also discusses the status of the artist in ‘Trecento’ society, the influence of legal contracts on the imagery and materials of painting, and the ceremony that accomapnied the installation of an altarpiece.
