Introduction to John Dowland, An

Synopsis: Analyses in detail Dowland’s song ‘Can She Excuse My Wrongs’ in order to illuminate the general approach to the setting of words taken by composers of the period. There is an historical introduction to Dowland himself and the song is performed both in its version for solo voice and lute accompaniment and in its version for four voices. The singers are dressed in Elizabethan costume and, in the case of the solo performance, the Elizabethan setting of Manor Turret House, where Mary Queen of Scots was incarcerated.
