Synopsis
An introductory seminar presented by David J Buckley intended to expose application specialists and managers to the complexities of GIS (geographic information systems) technology and terminology. It emphasises the identification and illustraiont of basic concepts in GIS applications. These are supplemented with realistic forest management applications whicn include: the identification of resource capabilities, forest inventory updating, forest merchantability and digital elevation model (DEM) modelling, as well as determining land use suitability and potential conflict. Topics covered in the workshop include the nature of geographic information; fundamental GIS concepts; data input; data storage and retrieval; data manipulation and analysis; assessment, acquisition and implementation.
