Human Nutrition (2 Parts)
- Synopsis
- The ability to measure body composition and energy expenditure is essential to recording the nutritional status and health of populations and vital in the struggle to understand the impact of different diseases on humans and prescribe appropriate nutritional diets.
1: Demonstrates and discusses the two most accurate techniques available for measuring body composition: underwater weighing and dual X-ray absorptionmetry (DEXA). Also shows a range of alternative, simpler, more commonly used techniques: calipers; near-infrared interactance; bioelectrical impedance. Concludes with an interview with Dr Mike Stroud, nutritionist and explorer, describing his research experiences while walking across Antarctica.
2: Discusses and demonstrates the main indirect calorimetry techniques for measuring expenditure and analyses their strengths and weaknesses: the Douglas bag method; the whole body chambers/ measurement; the ventilated hood; the spirometer technique; doubley labelled water; heart rate monitoring. Concludes with an interview with Dr Mike Stroud, nutritionist and explorer, describing his research experiences while walking across Antarctica. - Language
