Play synopsis: A drama of love, fidelity, treachery, and poetry presented in the style of traditional Chinese theatre. Set under the Tang dynasty, the story depicts the devotion of a wife for her adventurous husband, of his prowess as a warrior, and his ultimate return.
Production history: Performed at the Little Theatre in John Street, London, by the People’s National Theatre, directed by Nancy Price and Hsiung, where it ran for between February 1935 and November 1936. Roger Livesey played the Prime Minister’s gardener and Maisie Durrell played Lady Precious Stream. Published: London: Methuen & Co., 1934.
