Play synopsis

The characters, all disillusioned, arrive at a moorland inn, in the mountains of South Wales, which has been destroyed by fire. The curate has lost his faith, a wife despises her cowardly husband who in turn has lost his confidence a rich woman is bored with life and a journalist begins to doubt her judgement. The ghosts of the inn re-enact a crime for these characters in this half thriller, half psychological melodrama.

Production history

The play was the first to open London’s Duke of York’s Theatre in 1940 after it’s wartime closure.
