Play synopsis: A play about ‘a professional swindler who, with the help of a down-and-out journalist, manages to pass himself off in Paris as a high-ranking Soviet official in search of political asylum. The resulting situation enables Sartre to poke fun at pomposity and humbug in politics, the press, the police, and the public’ (Radio Times, 13 September 1957, p. 5).
