Play synopsis: This comedy is set in the Irish village of Chuckeyhead where District Judge Udolphus McCluskey arrives from Dublin (he is the ‘devil’ of the play’s title) to stamp out the border smuggling which is the life-blood of the village. The play also concerns the ‘wild romantic cunning’ of Rita Ronan who is out to find herself a heroic husband (Radio Times, 9 December 1955, p. 15).
Production history: The Devil Came from Dublin was first staged in the John Drew Memorial Theatre, New York in 1951 (source: http://www.doollee.com/PlaywrightsC/carroll-paul-vincent.html#100420, accessed 12 November 2012). The play was a revision of Carroll’s The Chuckeyhead Story which was first performed in Bournemouth’s Pavilion in 1950.
