The Black Furies

Summary: The Angry Gods was an eight-part Associated-Rediffusion series for ITV Schools first transmitted from January to March 1961. The series offered the following programmes: programme 1, A Sacred Offering, a condensed Iphigenia at Aulis, plus brief extract from Bacchae; programmes 2-4, the Oresteia trilogy; and programmes 5-8, The Winter’s Tale in four parts. The first four programmes in the series were in 1963 re-transmitted as part of the series named Theatres and Temples: The Greeks.
Theatre play: Choephoroi by Aeschylus [more information]
Play synopsis: Choephoroi, the second play in the Oresteia trilogy, tells of the reunion of Agamemnon’s children Electra and Orestes, following their father’s murder at the hands of their mother Clytemnestra. Orestes avenges his murder by killing his mother.
Production history: First performed in 458 BC as part of the Oresteia trilogy alongside Agamemnon and Eumenides.
