Summary: This BBC production of Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis, directed by Don Taylor, was the last Greek tragedy on British television for more than two decades.

Play synopsis: This play concerns the sacrifice of Iphigenia by her father, the Greek hero Agamemnon, to secure fair winds so the Greek fleet can sail to Troy to fetch Helen who has been taken their by Paris. Iphigenia, who has been brought to Aulis under the pretence of marrying the hero Achilles, is at first understandably reluctant to die but she changes her mind and in the end goes willingly to her death in order to save the expedition.
