Play synopsis

The setting is the East End of London in the early 1940s. The protagonist, Esther, is in love with a soldier with whom she conceives a child. She is from an orthodox Jewish family and he is not. When she continues the relationship, her father refuses to talk to her. The context of the war accentuates the family split, and yet serves to bring everyone back together when her fiance is killed on active service.
