Play synopsis: Comedy. ‘Sergeant Jack Hardacre left a safe job to join the Army in the recent war; he fought with the Eighth Army from Alamein to Italy, he won three medals, he was wounded... [Back in] Lancashire, his mother, Sarah Hardacre, would never think of letting her son know how proud she is of him ... And the neighbours are all too ready to start managing the affairs of their returning hero; his particular problem here is that before going away, Jack had become engaged to Janey Jenkins. What with Janey’s persistence and her pressing mother, Jack would probably take the line of least resistance as he had done before, but for two facts. One is that in the Army he acquired a mind of his own; the other is that in his absence his mother acquired a pretty lodger from the south called Milly.'
