Play synopsis

The play focuses on the love affair between the Italian Lisa and the American soldier Robert in the poverty-stricken Roman winter of 1944. Their story characterises the wider relationship of the defeated Italians and their conquerors.

Production history

Hayes adapted his own 1949 novel The Girl on the Via Flaminia into a play; in 1953 it was adapted into the film Act of Love.
