Play synopsis: Adapted by Mazo de la Roche from one of her novels in the Whiteoaks saga. Mary Wakefield, fresh out from England, arrives at Jalna, the Whiteoaks family home in Canada, to be governess to the small children of the widower son, Philip Whiteoak. The children themselves are high-spirited enough to keep her occupied, but Mary is also young and pretty, which arouses some envy and gossip, especially when it becomes clear that Philip is strongly attracted to her. And at least one person is determined that nothing shall come of the attraction: Adeline, Philip’s formidable mother, will allow nobody to challenge her authority as mistress of Jalna.
