Play synopsis

This play, the action of which takes place across a single day in a house by the sea in Dorset, ‘expresses the kind of predicament quite common among people reaching middle age. Without realising that time is slipping away, they relentlessly pursue a way of life, a career, at the expense of everything else, only to find it quite unrewarding’ (TV Times, 27 March 1959, p. 7).
