Play synopsis: Jessie has just had her first child with her husband Jim. Jim is away, working as the skipper of a tanker, but will soon be home, on a shore job, for six months. The baby boy dies, and Jessie is told it will be impossible for her to have more children. She puts off telling her husband this dreadful news, and instead looks into adopting another baby. Joan, meanwhile, is a woman who had a baby boy in the same hospital a few days before Jessie and who is looking to put him forward for adoption.
