Play synopsis: 'Ambrose Applejohn lives in a jonely spot on the Cornish coast, in the house that has been his family’s home for centuries. With him live Agatha Whatcombe, who is herself an Applejohn, and Poppy Faire who is a second cousin to the Applejohns: it is, as will be gathered, an ordered and appropriate household. For Ambrose himself, though only in his early forties, has settled down to the life of a bachelor of fixed habits... Then one day Ambrose realises that he has become a stick-in-the- mud. The spirit of romance suddenly flames within him: he dreams of danger and damsels in distress and stolen jewels, of Applejohn matching wits with international crooks. He determines to sell his house, abandon his staid ways and go in search of adventure; but rather to his consternation, before he has time to do that, adventure comes in search of him.'
