Play synopsis: Former lawn tennis champion Tony Wendice suspects that his wealthy wife Sheila is having an affair with Max, who has recently returned from America. Wendice blackmails a former army comrade into murdering Sheila and making it look like a burglary gone wrong. But the scheme does not take into account the notion that Sheila might fight back and kill her assailant. The police investigate, Milland improvises quickly, and Tony has to improvise suggesting that his wife has committed first-degree murder. He almost gets away with it...
