Play synopsis: The story tells of ‘A fallen woman’s love for a young man of family, her noble renunciation of him, and the brief reunion which precedes her death from consumption’ (Radio Times, 6 February 1964, p. 35).
Production history: Dumas’ novel was published in 1848 and subsequently adapted for the stage. It premiered at the Théâtre du Vaudeville in Paris in 1852. The play was an instant success, and Giuseppe Verdi immediately set about putting the story to music. His work became the 1853 opera La Traviata.
