Play synopsis: 'Irene Surrey works like the proverbial slave, and is taken for granted by her husband, Fred - an insensitive man you’d like to hit, though he is well-meaning and respectable. No one ever thinks it is possible that Irene’s soul longs for things on a higher plane than queues, ration books and sock-darning. No one except Alan Crompton, who comes to live next door with his unimaginative and ailing wife. His job is no more romantic than Irene’s - he is a bank clerk-but he has a nice appreciation of the arts, poetry in particular.
