Play synopsis

The action of the play takes place in the East End of London and covers a period of two weeks in late summer. Charlie Stubbs tries to escape his poverty by becoming a criminal. When this course of action fails he cleans up his act and becomes a cab driver for the woman he loves, Annie Collins. Trouble follows Charlie however when Annie’s uncle discovers his past.

Production history

First produced for the stage in 1930 and made into a British feature film in 1932.
