Play synopsis: A hard-hitting story of an unhappily married couple who run a public house, told in vigorous, realistic dialogue. Despite their bickering having an effect on their children, they can’t bring themselves to stop until a tragedy befalls them.
Production history: The TV Times of 5 September 1958, p. 16 states that there had not been a public presentation of the play before the 1958 Granada production for ITV; Michael Murphy, writing in Kenneth Allott’s Collected Poems (Cambridge: Salt, 2008, p. xv), however, states that it was produced in 1953.
