Play synopsis: A one-act play in eight scenes in which a young soldier lies dying in the trenches in France, and thinks forward to the end of the 1920s. He appears as a ghost for the middle part of the play, observing how his loved ones respond to the end of the war.
Production history: Written in 1930 as a response to R. C. Sherriff’s Journey’s End, Coward considered that it was not suitable for performance. It was published in 1931. The play was first staged in a prisoner-of-war camp in Austria in 1944. The 1968 BBC television production is billed in the Radio Times as the play’s first professional performance (12 September 1968, p. 22). It was first presented professionally on stage in 1992.
