Broadway

Summary: 1968 BBC production of Broadway by George Abbott and Philip Dunning, the first play in the new series The Jazz Age, featuring music by Norton York and the New Yorkers. The series of plays and adaptations of short stories and novels from or about the 1920s was prefaced by the introductory programme The Spirit of the Twenties, a historical film compilation with commentary written and spoken by Malcolm Muggeridge (8.15-9.15pm, 7 September 1968).

Play synopsis: Crime drama set in the New York underworld during Prohibition. The action takes place in the private party room of the Paradise night club.
Production history: The stage play opened in a production by Jed Harris on 16 September 1926 at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York. It was the hit of the season and it repeated its success when it was staged in London three months later.
