A useful website on all aspects of Polish culture both contemporary and historical. Articles and reviews cover literature, film, music, visual arts and theatre. This piece on Polish Cinema of the Silent Era gives an overview of early film practitioners in Poland; another piece considers the mind-boggling difficulties and the human cost of translating Finnegans Wake into Polish, one of only ten languages to have its own version of Joyce’s magnum opus.

An offshoot of the Museum of the Moving Image website this resource provides articles on film, television, and digital media by leading critics and scholars, as well as providing links to other online resources, arranged according to the following categories: Criticism and Theory, History, Industry, People and Technology. There are also links to online catalogues, archives and databases. The latest issue offers a series of video essays on Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo’, in honour of that film’s new status as ‘Greatest Film of All Time’ according to the latest Sight & Sound magazine’s critics’ poll.
Another page, called Pinewood Dialogues offers interviews and discussions with creative figures in film, television, and digital media, including Jane Campion, Francis Ford Coppola, Thelma Schoonmaker, Terence Davies and David Cronenberg, to name just a few. The interviews can be downloaded as MP3s: many are also available as transcripts to read in HTML or downloaded as PDFs.

The aim of this site is to bring together in one place links to selected documentary films that are streamed on other sites across the web e.g. GoogleVideo, YouTube, Guba, MegaVideo, Youku etc., and organise them by subject matter such as 9/11, art & artists, drugs, economics, environment, health, comedy, history, religion, music & performing arts, science, philosophy, politics, society, technology, biography, etc. A clear warning is issued that TDF has no control over copyright issues relating to the streaming media. The site quotes reputable reviews of the documentaries and provides a space for comments from viewers. There is also an online store, linked to Amazon, where thousands of the films are classified into categories for ease of purchase.

Housed on the Coppernob, cnmovies has combined the Halliwell film guides with Alan Goble’s The Complete Index to World Film Since 1895. The site essentially just reproduces the text of Halliwell and Goble’s books, but it also links to the Coppernob site which provides streamed material such as trailers, full length cartoons and a ‘Vintage Movie Channel’, as well as showbiz news, reviews and interviews. This site is no longer active, but Alan Goble’s guide now has a separate site The Complete Index to World Film since 1895.

The Missing Link is devoted to British and American horror films and aims to provide a comprehensive listing of all those made up to 1950, with slightly scantier information taking it into the 1960s. The site includes film and book reviews and more general articles on particular personalities or themes, which are well researched and surprisingly in-depth. It is possible to search by title and by personality and many of the reviews include both video and audio clips which can be viewed using RealPlayer.

This growing resource of materials is aimed at media studies students and hails from the British Film Institute. It includes several thousand individual items, including biographies of British film and television personnel, including actors, writers, directors, producers, composers, cinematographers. These can be searched by name or via an alphabetical list. The database incorporates some material from the recently published Encyclopedia of British Film and from the forthcoming Reference Guide to British and Irish Film Directors and evenly covers both television and film. It also includes stills, posters, scripts and other fascinating items. One of its most exciting features is the vast amount of material that can be viewed on the site, much of which comes from the BFI’s National Film and Television Archive. This is only available to schools, colleges, universities and public libraries on their premises and not elsewhere. These include extensive clips from rare and obscure film and television titles as well as entire episodes from such classic TV shows as Fawlty Towers. The streamed material can be viewed with QuickTime, Real and Windows Media Player and cannot be downloaded for copyright reasons.
