The catalogue to the British L:ibrary Sound Archive’s collection of over two and a half million recordings stretching back to the late 19th century is now available online. The catalogue entries are precise, but it is not possible (as yet) to listen the recordings themselves. The seven main subject areas covered by the collection are Classical Music, Drama and Literature, International Music, Jazz, Oral History, Popular Music and Wildlife Sound. The site includes practical information on accessing the recordings, details of BLSA publications, and a valuable page of external links. In May 2009, a Curator for Radio was appointed and since then a new set of web pages relating to radio have been produced.

An on-going multi-media project, launched in 2008, that aims to provide a guide to the history and heritage of wildlife filmmaking. It consists of television programmes and films dating back to 1896. This historically valuable material has been donated by the most famous names in Natural History broadcasting, as well as a host of specialist and private collections. The project is also collecting behind the scenes photographs, and recording video interviews with industry pioneers. The resulting collection is freely available and is being stored at high resolution in the WildFilmHistory media vault for the benefit of future generations. Clips from 200 films are streamed on the website.

ARKive is a centralised digital library of films, photographs and sound recordings on species, created by the Wildscreen Trust. ARKive describes itself as a ‘virtual conservation effort - finding, sorting, cataloguing and copying the key records of species, and building them into a comprehensive and enduring audio-visual record’. ARKive’s short to mid-term priority is the completion of audio-visual profiles for the 16,300-plus species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, before moving on to profiling all species that have ever been filmed or photographed. Currently there are 500 globally endangered species, and a British ‘chapter’ is in development covering 750 examples of rare and common British flora and fauna. Animals are classified by species, common name and Latin name, and described in detail. There is a mixture of still and moving image records, and sound recordings - the moving images are available in downloadable QuickTime, and in streaming format for Real (modem and broadband) and Windows Media Player (modem and broadband). The quality of the encodings is high, and the whole site is a model of clarity, intelligence and commitment to the preservation of species and our greater understanding of the world’s wildlife.

The Wildlife Focus website was set up by the World Land Trust early in January 2008 to offer unique, high-quality multimedia content showing wildlife in remote South American rainforests. There is live footage from three webcams, one in the cloud forest of Ecuador and two in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. Each webcam is visited by a wide variety of rainforest wildlife including many hummingbird species, brightly coloured tanagers, parakeets and toucans. The site also streams video clips of other birds and rainforest animals filmed at Buenaventura and other reserves. The quality of the live images is extremely good, except when temporarily affected by climatic conditions. The site also offers podcasts and a virtual tour to show more about endangered wildlife and their habitats - and the conservation efforts needed to keep them safe.

Rotating views of various insects (flea, stag beetle, ant, termite etc), requiring QuickTime. The promised 3-D images are on VRML files which require special software downloads and shutter glasses. This site is no longer active, but the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine offers a capture of the website as it appeared on 20/03/2015. This does not include access to the moving images.

The Pacific Marine Environmental Agency in co-ordination with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, US Department of Commerce has been undertaking research on the geological and life sciences of volcanoes and hydrothermal vents across the world’s oceans. Remote controlled vehicles and submersibles have recorded footage. Other footage has been taken by the New Millennium Observatory (NeMO) an underwater observation centre at the site of the volcanic eruption of Axial Seamount off the Oregon coast. Videos includes the work of the researchers, the geological environment and the rare marine life of the area. A link to the NeMO website allows a virtual tour and ‘fly-through movie’ of the various research centres, making this an excellent site for the manipulation of interactive learning and assessment. The movies are available in a mixture of MPEG and QuickTime.
