IMPALA (Informal Mobile Podcasting and Learner Adaptation) is a Higher Education Academy-funded project researching into the use of podcasts in university teaching and learning. It has produced its own series of podcasts offering guidance for staff on how to use this resource. There is also a blog providing up-to-date information on the project. A linked project, IMPALA 2, is investigating the impact of podcasting on student learning in Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES), and delivers testable and transferable models of using podcasting for learning in these subjects. IMPALA4T investigates the use of ‘student created’ podcasts to support the transition of students into higher education. The project seems to have concluded but the website contains much useful information.

The mission of The Academic Film Archive of North America is to acquire, preserve, document, and promote academic film by providing an archive, resource, and forum for continuing scholarly advancement and public exhibition. The archives focus is on films made between 1960 and 1985, when decreased funding and the advent of videotape brought an effective end to the 16mm classroom film. Areas of research include individual films and series, biographical and philosophical information on filmmakers, and histories of companies specialising in making and distributing academic film. The collection currently consists of around 5,000 16mm films. The website gives biographies and filmographies of some of the leading makers of educational films and, slightly bizzarely, information on what child and young adult actors who appeared in academic films are doing now. One of the aims is to make as many of the films as possible available for free viewing on the Internet Archive, and twenty or so are already streamed there.
