This portal, hosted by the University of Oxford, and curated by members of the Faculty of English Language and Literature, makes available thousands of learning resources, all in the public domain or under a Creative Commons licence. The selection of writers is not comprehensive: just over 40 authors are represented, including the mainstays of the Western literary canon: Austen, Dickens, Shakespeare, Milton, Blake, Swift, Joyce etc.; but more neglected writers are there too, including 18th century labouring-class poets Stephen Duck and Mary Leapor. What the resource lacks in breadth it makes up for in the richness of resources which are available, including podcasts, videos of talks and lectures, downloadable electronic texts and ebooks, and contextual essays by members of the English Faculty. A selection of different approaches to literature are suggested by a Themes page which covers Notions of Authorship, Genre and Feminist Approaches to Literature" among others.

This philosophy podcast is presented as in informal roundtable discussion with each episode based on a short reading that introduces a major philosophical question, concern or idea. The presenters are all former philosophy students and are not formally affiliated to an academic institution but the content of the podcasts, despite the chatty tone, is wide-ranging and substantial and covers Ethics, Political Philosophy, Epistemology, Metaphysics, the Philosophy of Art, the Philosophy of Religion and the Philosophy of Language. The podcasts are free to listen to but the site encourages listeners to make a small donation.

The brainchild of former North Carolina State University professor Marshall Brain, this site uses various media, including podcasts and videos, to explain how things work. It is essentially a popular science site but contains a great deal of high quality educational content and has now expanded to cover non-science subjects (see for example How Nepotism Works). Searching is made easier by a clear interface in which categories with their various subdivisions are simply displayed: the Engineering Videos page, for example, features categories such as Robotics, Buildings and Structures, Materials Science. The site’s videos and podcasts are supplemented by a number of blogs.

ScienceStage.com has the stated aim of being "the universal online portal for science, advanced teaching, and research’. It allows scientists, lecturers, academics, students, and practitioners from all fields to present and share ideas and findings through video streaming, audio streaming, and text documents, and to make use of community functions such as chat, email, and blogs. Video and audio clips - lectures, interviews and documentaries - come from a wide variety of sources and are accessible for free streaming via a good subject index, although very prominent advertising is at times a distraction.

This amusing and exceptionally well-informed resource is the brainchild of director and movie buff Joe Dante. It brings together classic and not-so-classic film trailers and then provides introductions and audio commentaries for them from a wide variety of film industry professionals including such notable movie makers as Dante himself, Edgar Wright, John Landis, Guillermo del Toro, Mary Lambert, John Sayles and Roger Corman, amongst others. The site can be searched by film title, genre, decade and the person making the commentary. The range of films is very broad so that one can hear some straightforward praise as when director John Badham discusses the trailer for To Kill a Mockingbird, which co-starred his sister Mary, and make-up guru Rick Baker comments on the biopic of his hero Lon Chaney, but there are also such unlikely juxtapositions as Neil Labute discussing British technicolor classic, Black Narcissus.

This ambitious and highly impressive resource accompanies the 4-part BBC series on the history of the web presented by Dr Aleks Krotoski. Excitingly designed, its most significant features include a 3D Documentary Explorer, an experimental interactive browser that allows the first two episodes of the series to be viewed alongside relevant web content so that one may stop the programme at any moment and select other material to peruse and then restart again. In a fascinating development, rushes from the making of the series are also available for download to help users create their own documentary. Highly recommended.
