Resource devoted to experimental film and filmmakers in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1980. The website’s content is the culmination of three years of research into the archives of film venues and organizations, the recording of 35 oral histories, and the creation of a database, which catalogues the films, exhibitions, organisations, and people active during this prolific period in experimental film and video making.

A public learning laboratory, The Exploratorium, is devoted to just that: exploring the world through science, art and human perception. Their mission is ‘to create inquiry-based experiences that transform learning worldwide’ and perhaps more importantly their vision is ‘a world where people think for themselves and can confidently ask questions, question answers, and understand the world around them’. The museum makes available a vast range of, video programmes, organised by subjects, including: Arts (532 videos), Astronomy and Space (220), Biology (331), Chemistry (97), History (35), Mathematics (19), Nature of Science (13), Perception (55), Physics (215), and Social Science (575). There is also a Websites section with over 35, 000 pages of content, which can be explored by subject too.

A voice for biodiversity research and exploration, and environmental education, the California Academy of Science’s site offers a wide range of learning experiences via mobile applications, interactives and animal webcams. The Video Library showcases short films on the latest discoveries and research findings made by Academy scientists around the world. Who makes History? This resource, launched in 2014, is dedicated to recording and popularising people’s history, that is, the history of ‘everyday women, men, people of colour, migrants, indigenous people, LGTB people, disabled people, workers, the unemployed, housewives and single mothers, as opposed to the history of rich and powerful individuals, kings, queens and politicians’. The collection of podcasts presented here tell the stories of past struggles which still resonate today. Each episode has a ‘Footnotes’ section, which offers links to relevant resources including short videos, articles written at the time, and websites. Events covered so far are: the Grunwick strike of East African and Asian women workers in London 1976-8; The Angry Brigade, Britain’s first urban guerrilla group; Anti-Nazi youth movements in World War II; Workmates: organising with agency workers on London Underground; Industrial Workers of the World in the US, 1905-1918 and 1918-1950s; The West Virginia mine Wars, 1902-1922; The Vietnam War strike wave; Spanish Civil War; The League of Revolutionary Black Workers in Detroit; Women in the Miners strike; Peterloo massacre with Mike Leigh; Women in the early IWW (Industrial Workers of the World Union).

Created by the National Institute for Health Research, ‘I Am Research’ is tasked with involving patients and the public in all the phases of their work, from health research to the translation of discoveries into practical products, treatments devices and procedures. The site offers a wealth of information including help for researchers on data, samples and how to identify patients for research, and Research facilities in your area, which can be searched by postcode or speciality. There is also a YouTube Channel with short videos about why research is crucial and what getting involved in research studies means to cohorts of different ages. This can be useful for those tasked with explaining what research is in the classroom and those thinking in becoming researchers.

The importance of fungi for all aspects of life on Earth and the size of the fungi kingdom, which is six times larger than the kingdom of plant species, makes research in this little studied field crucial: for example, last year a new species of fungi was discovered in Pakistan which is capable of digesting and breaking down plastic; this could be a part of the solution to the global challenge of clearing plastic in oceans and on the land. The Fungi and Lichens website provides technical (but approachable) accounts of the current status of species in the British Isles, including descriptions, images, distribution data, ecology and conservation information. It is aimed at those with a serious interest in fungi, either as natural historians or professional biologists. The project is run by the Mycology Department at Kew Gardens who has just published the 2018 State of the World’s Fungi report.

A free online platform designed to provide advanced researchers with the open climate data, visualizations and resources they need to gather insights on national and global progress on climate change. The platform, managed by the World Resource Institute, brings together dozens of datasets for the first time and allows users to analyse and compare the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, access historical emissions data, discover how countries can leverage their climate goals to achieve their sustainable development objectives, and use models to map new pathways to a lower carbon. The site can be searched by Countries, Economic sector, Nationally Determined Contribution, Global Historical Gas Emissions and Future Scenarios, where users can model projections of emissions.
