    The product of Biofaction, a research and science communication company based in Vienna, the film festival was set out in 2011 to explore synthetic biology from all possible angles. Winners and shortlisted entries (over 110 films in total) are available to watch for free. Winning shorts include: Copy & Clone and Bruce (Animation category), Hybris and (In)visible (Fiction category), New Mumbai and E-Chromi (Documentary category), and Vermin (Special Award of the Jury).

    A collection of short films screened at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen over their 60 years of history. The films are now available for free via their website. Each title comes with a brief detail of when and in which section of the festival the short was originally screened. The list is packed with treasures, including: Kenneth Anger’s Eaux d’artifice (1953), Jean Mitry’s Symphonie Mecanique (1955), Norman McLaren’s Rhythmetic (1956), Polanski’s Two Men and a Wardrove (1958) and Mammals (1962), Truffaut and Godard’s Ube Historie D’eau (1961), an experimental short by George Lucas from 1967; Scorsese’s The Big Shave (1967), Chris Maker’s La Sixieme Face du Pentagone (1968), Chantal Akerman’s La Chambre (1972), Agnes Varda Response des Femmes (1975), Kryssztof Kieslowski’s Talking Heads (1980); a short film banned in France for over 40 years, Africa 50 by Rene Vautier; Valie Export’s Syntagma (1983), Andrea Arnold’s Dog (2001), Gus van Sant’s Ballad of the Skeletons (1997).

    Launched in 2015 by Birkbeck Institute for Moving Image, the programming of The Essay Film Festival aims to provide a focus for the current global expansion of this type of film, which is understood as a hybrid form that brings together elements of documentary and experimental filmmaking into a highly personal and often politically engaged mode of expression. Some classic exponents of the essay film are Humphrey Jennings, Harun Farocki, Patrick Keiller and Agnes Varda. The Events section of the site contains information and resources about past and present editions of the festival, including video and audio recordings of events, photographs, articles and other documents, which are of special value for anyone who is interested in this engaging mode of filmmaking. The Audio Archives present Interviews, Q&As with prominent film theorists such as Thomas Elsaesser and Peter Wollen, and filmmakers including Pierre Creton, Jocelyn Saab, Joao Moreira Salles and Thom Andersen.

    Published daily by MUBI, Notebook offers a significant amount of free content in the form of Video Essays, Interviews, News and Reviews. There is a section of Features which includes some gems such as an exclusive translation of the one interview Jean-Luc Goddard gave about his film The Image Book (2019), an interview with director Nadav Lapid about his Golden Bear-winning film Synonyms (2019), and a discussion with German director Christian Petzold about his film Transit (2018). All the trailers for the films can be watched for free. Searching by film title via the main search tool is the most efficient way of accessing the site’s content.

    The LFFF is an independent festival set up in 2012, which celebrates feminist films past and present from international women directors.
    It aims to support women filmmakers in the male-dominated film industry, to get women’s stories out there, and to inspire feminist discussion and activism. The Archive section offers short clips of many of the films included in the programme of each edition of the festival, which combines feminist classics with a selection of current international titles. For example, award-winning A Place of Rage (Pratibha Parmar, 1991) which is a celebration of African American women and their achievements, featuring interviews with Angela Davis, June Jordan, and Alice Walker; Cycologic, which follows urban planner Amanda Ngabirano’s campaign for a cycling lane in her city, and the plea of other women cyclists who negotiate the restrictions imposed on women by society; Ouaga Girls, which shows a group of young women who are training to be car mechanics in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou.

    English-lamguage site featuring news, biographies and filmographies covering experimental and avant garde cinema in Eastern Europe, from the 1930s to the present day. Countries covered are the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Romania. The site features a selection of videos (mainly short films) as well as documentaries, lectures and recordings of events about the avant garde and experimental film . There are links to other sites dealing with experimental film in the above countries, as well as information about festivals, galleries and exhibition spaces.

    Launched in 2015, this resource is the largest single source of information on films produced in and about the Caribbean, featuring information on more than 500 films from the English, Dutch, French and Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Entries feature, synopsis, production details, brief credits and cast information and most are accompanied by excerpts or trailers. The focus is on contemporary film, so most of the films are post-2000 but a Classic Films section includes films reflecting the region’s rich cinematic history, from well-known titles like The Harder They Come to less widely recognised examples such as Haïti, le chemin de la liberté, the first Haitian feature film. The database features examples from the Caribbean diaspora, so films set in the UK, such as Babylon also feature. A section on Caribbean Women in Film highlights the work of female directors and a there are also links to information about film festivals, film schools and a bibliography.

    The Labor Film Database lists nearly 2,000 films and videos from around the world about work, workers and worker’s issues. The database is searchable by title, director, actors and/or keywords (e.g. discrimination, global economy, whistleblowing). The synopses vary in length and detail but are informative and well written. Many of the entries are accompanied by the streamed film; there are also trailers and film stills. The database is intended to serve as a valuable resource for programmers of film festivals highlighting work and workers. Users of the site are encouraged to submit suggestions for films to be included on the database.

    The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum exists to collect, preserve and interpret the impact rock has made on popular culture. The evolving story of rock can be found on the blog and feature pages offering news, artist interviews, performance notes, and the latest event and exhibit happenings. The video series pages offer many streamed videos including Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney and Queen being inducted into the Hall of Fame and performances from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry and many others. The Short Video pages offer interviews with a range of performers, reminiscences such as Ringo Starr talking about his first drum kit and an edition on ‘Hound Dog’ and the twelve bar blues. The Museum’s Library contains over 1400 videos and 5,600 audio titles which can be accessed via the the online catalogue.

    A visually incoherent site (a consequence of downloading text direct from other sites) which brings together an impressive amount of information from numerous sources documenting the life and work of the Irish playwright and novelist. The site lists online texts, literature festivals and events, reviews, articles, and other websites and blogs devoted to Beckett. There are audio and film and television sections which indicate when a recording or broadcast is available commercially on CD or DVD (a warning that these are not always up to date) The site also records material available in other countries and in other languages. A small number of titles are streamed.
