A public learning laboratory, The Exploratorium, is devoted to just that: exploring the world through science, art and human perception. Their mission is ‘to create inquiry-based experiences that transform learning worldwide’ and perhaps more importantly their vision is ‘a world where people think for themselves and can confidently ask questions, question answers, and understand the world around them’. The museum makes available a vast range of, video programmes, organised by subjects, including: Arts (532 videos), Astronomy and Space (220), Biology (331), Chemistry (97), History (35), Mathematics (19), Nature of Science (13), Perception (55), Physics (215), and Social Science (575). There is also a Websites section with over 35, 000 pages of content, which can be explored by subject too.

This website has been publishing one podcast per day for all 365 days of 2009, 2010, 2011 and will continue to the end of 2012. The podcasts are between five and ten minutes long and are available to listen to or download from the site or via RSS and iTunes. Each podcast is accompanied by a summary, transcript and details of the podcasters, plus relevant links. Archived podcasts, which are arranged in date order, are not otherwise indexed or classified, but a free text search field can help users narrow their results. A simple idea, elegantly executed.

The Association Science & Télévision (AST) is a group of independent producers working for 37 different production companies based in France. These companies produce films in all genres but a large portion of their output is devoted to scientific productions. Together, they produce the vast majority of scientific programming broadcast on television in France, much of which also circulates abroad. The website (in French and English versions) gives details of the member companies and the association’s activities, together with a catalogue of the films they have produced (searchable by title or producer), with links to the producer’s site for further filmographic information.

Hundreds of video lectures and tutorials from around the world are available from here on a variety of scientific topics as well as interviews with such luminaries as Tim Berners Lee and Noam Chomsky. Windows Media Player is required to view. The presentation is for the most part very straightforward and rarely goes beyond the taping in medium shot of a speaker lecturing his audience, though some of the interviews do stray outside the lecture hall. The encodings are perfectly watchable even for items that last over an hour and in addition copies of the relevant PowerPoints have sometimes been included. The site does not offer a subject index, but there is an alphabetised run down of all the speakers. The site is available in English and Slovenian.

Since 1999, six Silicon Valley Astronomy Lectures have been presented each year at Foothill College, in California’s Silicon Valley. Speakers over the years have included Nobel-prize winners, members of the National Academy of Sciences, the first woman in history to discover a planet, an astrophysicist who is an award-winning science fiction writer, and many other well-known scientists explaining astronomical developments in everyday language. In the autumn 2006 the College began offering the lectures as audio podcasts, and it is hoped they may in the future also be available as streamed videos, funds permitting.

Formerly known as PSIgate (Physical Sciences Information Gateway), this site is the physical sciences hub of Intute (formerly known as the Resource Discovery Network or RDN). Intute became inactive in 2011 and the archived site was closed in December 2014. Here is presented an archive of the listings that are still available in the physical sciences: astronomy, chemistry, earth sciences, physics and general science.

An ‘archive’ of historical audio, still and moving image material, chiefly American. Among the huge range of material available is a large section on the Kennedy assassination (with many original radio and TV broadcasts but not the Zapruder footage of the assassination itself); Kennedy press conferences; World War Two broadcasts from Churchill, Roosevelt, Eisenhower and broadcaster Ed Murrow; the Vietnam War; sound effects and theme tunes; various space sounds and pictures; UFOs; old radio broadcasts; compilations of American television advertisements. The look of the site is ugly and its arrangement haphazard, but there is much of interest and value for the patient. Footage for sale inexpensively on DVD.
